Accounting Programs Online Are Good Business

Starting out in a different manner than most, I earned a masters in an online accounting program. It all started when I bought new financial software to help me manage my business accounts. However, the program did nothing but confuse me. With various charts to track the business information, the program was not meshing with my understanding. I really needed to educate myself.

Starting my own business, I soon found myself branching out into various areas. Here is a great financial related web page http://www.finanicialstory.com. Although I was able to keep sound records of my business finances, I had never been technological gifted so I had done so without software programs. With my hands on the files and papers, I was perfectly able to manage my own system, but the software was so abstract to me that I would soon become baffled.

Without papers to manipulate, I could not track the orders and money in that manner. Although my company was growing enough to need more than book keeping by hand, I still wanted it to be personal enough that I kept track of things myself, which is why I did not hire someone else to handle it. This led to my taking the accounting program online.

If I had been intending to sell myself as an accountant, I may have considered a traditional university with accreditation to earn my degree. However, since this was just to help me in my personal business, I felt the online accounting program was more flexible giving me enough time to keep working in my business.

With the online accounting program, I did not have to do class work at a certain time. Instead, I could do the homework as it fit into my busy schedule. The online accounting program was also more practical for my purposes spending less time on theory and more time on real application. I never had to leave my computer to finish the degree.

Time to put an end to the payment protection insurance witch hunts

THERE has been so much written in the past few months about payment protection insurance it has all become a little confusing. Most of what has been written has been very negative, indeed dangerously negative witch-hunt proportions even in some quarters. A mortgage magazine even ran a campaign to have single premium accident, sickness, unemployment banned.

Amid all the chest beating and promotion, some clarity is desperately needed. Without relevant PPI being offered to customers, there is an even greater risk of one of the fundamental objectives of the FSA not being met and that is protecting consumer interests.

The PPI witch-hunt has also lumped together mortgage payment protection insurance and single premium ASU. These products are, of course, all very different. Most of the Office of Fair Tradings concerns re- volved around the potential mis-selling of PPI related to consumer and revolving credit sales, not mortgages.

In November 2005, the FSA published a report detailing its findings about the sale of PPI. This was backed up with mystery shopping of various firms involved in the sale of PPI that goes beyond mortgages to other companies that offer revolving lines of credit, store accounts and unsecured loans. It was much broader than the mortgage industry alone and, given the mortgage industry has been regulated by the FSA for some time now, it has taken a disproportionate amount of flak.

Experience

It does strike me as odd that people who have very limited experience in the mortgage market and more specifically experience in the sub-prime mortgage market have been pontificating about the so-called evils of single premium ASU.

The mortgage industry as a whole needs to assess the risks and benefits yes, benefits of single premium ASU with calm heads, because things have moved on.

Fact one. Sub-prime clients cancel their monthly ASU policies. Some major insurers have even withdrawn the product from sale because the persistency levels are so low. That is what sub-prime clients do. It is the same reason they cancel their life policies. That does not mean we should stop writing life business because we would be leaving customers and their families exposed.

There is a fundamental issue here. Why sell a client a monthly policy when he has a demonstrated history of not being able to meet his monthly commitments?

And guess what? Fact two: sub-prime clients will cancel their monthly ASU policy at the time when they need it the most. The potential ramifications for the IFA/mortgage broker are dire should he be unable to demonstrate that he offered his client the option of either monthly or single premium ASU and it has subsequently gone pear shaped for his client.

Some brokers detail the costs and benefits of ASU in the suitability letter and document in that letter if the client has chosen not to take it up. Some go even further. For clients who cancel their policies downstream, some brokers send a disclaimer ensuring they know what they are cancelling and detail the ramifications of having no cover.

It is cheaper to do that than risk the potential of attracting a lawsuit, and worse still drawing bad press to our business and brand.

There is no doubt that single premium ASU policies have come in for some major flak because of their poor flexibility and TCF unfriendliness.

Commission

Agreed and rightly so. One of the key issues at play here is the seemingly large commission payments made for single premium ASU.

Let us look at that issue in another context. What if a motor insurer offered a three-year product and guaranteed not to change price over the term with no inflationary creep? What if you got a further discount for paying that policy upfront as a lump sum? Of course, the selling broker would be paid his share of the total premium.

Single premium ASU is not really that different; it is just that a lot of commentators have got all bent out of shape about the commission payment and not the cover itself.

This problem has been further magnified by lots of people throwing their twopence into the ring when, to be frank, objectivity is needed and recognition of what has changed. There is a place for single premium ASU, but not as we used to know it.

What if the mortgage industry had a single premium ASU product that had the following features:

- provided no quibble pro-rata refunds if it was cancelled;
- where the premium was established using a risk matrix factoring in age and employment type similar to the way life premiums are calculated;
- where you can sell the accident, sickness and unemployment components independently of one another based on the customers individual circumstances;
- a product where you can factor in the clients own savings and existing employer protection policies to reduce the cost of the policy in line with risk;
- where you can defer the benefit payments by up to six months and be paid retrospectively in a lump sum;
- where you can change the policy mid-term, in other words the amount of cover can be increased or decreased or names on the policy can be changed without penalty; and
- where the true cost including capitalised interest of the single premium ASU is disclosed pre purchase to comply with treating customer fairly and Insurance Code of Business 5 rules. Indeed, all the product limitations, pre-existing conditions and exclusions are disclosed pre-purchase.

What if this product existed and its makers had worked closely with selected players in the mortgage industry to ensure all regulatory requirements were met and exceeded?

Well, I hate to say it but that is the product that one broker has sold and the intermediary has their FSA visits and, as with others, single premium ASU and its sale processes were heavily scrutinised. No problems. Perhaps some of the single premium ASU providers may wish to read the above product features just one more time.

Protected

Let us look at another angle. Surely lenders, particularly sub-prime lenders, have a duty of care to ensure that their clients needs are protected.

The stated objective of many in the mortgage industry is to ensure their sub-prime clients are credit cleansed.

So without any cover, they miss a mortgage payment or two or three and they are stuck with sub-prime rates for another year or two. All of a sudden that single premium ASU premium is not looking so expensive.

Things can and do go wrong, and it is our job as qualified professionals to ensure our clients needs are protected.

The Association of Mortgage Intermediaries has now responded to the FSAs request to address its concerns about PPI and I am sure that will be the start of some more sanity in the discussions surrounding its sale.

Single premium ASU is not about preying on desperate clients. One broker has developed a process that is FSA and TCF compliant and sells products that are appropriate to individual needs.

There is no doubt that the adverse publicity surrounding PPI sales has eroded not only consumer confidence but the confidence of IFAs and mortgage brokers to sell insurance cover that few could argue against.

Most of all, it is important to note that the industry has responded and moved on. Some people need to move with it.

Non Status Mortgages For Those With Poor Credit

Non Status Mortgages

If you are having difficulty getting a mortgage from your usual bank, and if you have a poor credit history, perhaps bankruptcy, or you have fallen in to debt through no fault of your own, then you may want to consider non status mortgages as the solution. With one in three people experiencing problems with their credit history, the mortgage industry has developed a way of arranging mortgages even among high-risk clients. . Poor credit history and bankruptcy can prove major drawbacks in the search for a regular mortgage, but non-status mortgages can provide a solution to these problems. This solution can also help those who are unable to provide proof of income, such as the self-employed.

Who Is Suitable For Non Status Mortgages

Non status mortgages are available to anyone who has problems obtaining a normal mortgage. That could be the self employed, or those on a fluctuating wage, and even those who have bad credit. Basically, bad credit is anything that will be held against you when you apply to lenders for a mortgage. This may involve bankruptcy, repossessions, failure to pay back loans, defaulting on payments, or anything else that has caused the bank to consider you a high risk customer. If you fall into any of those categories, then you might find that a high-street lender will just not take the risk; but a non-status mortgage can give you more leeway when it comes to purchasing a house.

What Does It Mean To Have Non Status Mortgages

With non-status mortgages, you do not need to provide proof of earnings, and you do not need to supply things like taxation documents. You will also not have to provide any evidence of previous mortgages. You will still have to undergo a credit check, and your lender may wish for references from landlords or previous employers.

Getting The Best Deal On Non Status Mortgages

As with everything financial, do not fall into the arms of the first company that accepts you. Shop around; the chances are that if one company will give you a loan, there is another one out there that will. You should always have a few loan options, otherwise how will you know when you are being given a good deal. There are now more companies offering non-status mortgages than ever before, it pays to look around.

Risks Of Non Status Mortgages

As with all mortgages, there are a few risks to take into consideration. Because of the high risk status of the mortgage, there are often higher premiums, greater interest rates, and greater risk for the homeowner. As the lenders are taking a greater risk in lending you the money in the first place, they are inevitably going to raise the prices. This can mean very high charges, which can be a bit daunting if you are already in debt. The good news is that with the expansion of the mortgage industry, there are more companies out there that need customers, and this is driving the premiums and interest right down, even amongst high risk clients such as those applying for non-secure mortgages.

Add Some Honey And Stop Feeling Guilty

According to Greek mythology, the ancient gods of Mount Olympus, like Zeus and Athena, used to eat nectar and ambrosia to maintain their healthy looks and perform their rather unusual human-like activities. Although scholars have not yet concluded on what exactly ambrosia was for ancient Greeks, nectar in botany is a sugar-rich liquid produced by the flowers of plants in order to attract pollinating insects, like honeybees, essential for honey production. Nectar is produced in glands called nectaries, which are located at the base of the perianth, so as to allow pollinators perform their role and accessing the flower's reproductive structures, the anthers and pistil, while collecting the nectar the flower produces.

The collected nectar is then transported by honeybees to combs where honey is produced. Honey is a sweet and viscous fluid, significantly sweeter than table sugar and has very attractive chemical properties for baking. With its distinct flavor, which leads some people to prefer it over sugar and other sweeteners, honey is a type of food that has great benefits for the human body and its consumption promotes contemporary nutritional habits and healthy dietary demands. Categorized both as a type of food and a natural medicine, honey has been used by a variety of civilizations for different reasons. Ancient Egyptians used it to preserve their dead (mummies), Roman's as an important cosmetic ingredient and it is mentioned even in the Christian Bible.

Many types of honey exist today and the recent technological developments have created the best possible conditions for honey production and have contributed to its different uses in medicine, food and cosmetic industries. But unfortunately, chemical substances used to increase the honey production and meet the greater demand existing today, have resulted in deteriorating its natural ingredients and even making it dangerous, in rare and extreme cases, for human consumption.

Contemporary consumers have the ability to protect their health by buying honey that is produced by professionals and thus minimize the risk of consuming a product that will not benefit the human body. But even when the honey purchased is produced in accordance to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Guidelines, it is extremely important for us to maintain the appropriate storage conditions and prolong its duration by promoting its safe use. Specifically, honey has to be stored in cool places and we have to avoid storing it close to electric appliances or near sunny windows that raise the temperature in the storage shelve or room. Any kind of utensil used to retrieve honey out of its container has to be totally clean and without any kind of moisture on it. Honey-lovers should follow these simple instructions in order to keep their purchased honey longer and their minds at rest regarding its safe use.

What is FAFSA?

FAFSA or Free Application for Federal Student Aid is a form that is filled out by university students and parents to apply for federal financial aid, which includes grants, scholarships, student loans and work-study programs. In addition to the federal government, schools, states and private financial institutions also use the information from the FAFSA to determine a students eligibility for non-federal aid

Each year, the Department of Education issues a new FAFSA for the subsequent academic year. You can either use the online version of FAFSA or you can obtain a printed copy of the application form from your high school counselor. If you intend to use the online version, then you would have to apply for Personal Identification Number (PIN). For this you would have to submit your name, date of birth, social security number and address. Once, you get your PIN, you can fill out the form and submit it online or print it and send it by mail.

While the printed version of FAFSA becomes available in the second week of October, the online version becomes accessible on January 1. Although the last date for the submission of FAFSA is June 30, but you can submit the form in either format as early as January 2. Most colleges and universities award financial aid on first come, first serve basis. Hence, to improve your chances of receiving financial aid, try to submit the FAFSA latest by March 1.

There are 102 questions in FAFSA, which are segregated into six sections. The primary aim of these questions is to retrieve your academic, personal and financial information. You would also be required to divulge your dependency status, colleges you want to receive your FAFSA results and your identification information. For filling out the FAFSA properly, you would need previous two years copies of your income tax returns.

Once you submit the FAFSA, the government will scrutinize it thoroughly, and then send you a Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR typically includes a summary of your financial aid information and the EFC (Expected Family Contribution). The colleges enlisted in your FAFSA will also receive SAR. When you apply for admission in these colleges, you will be asked to submit additional financial information. Thereafter, your eligibility for financial aid will be calculated, and then you will be notified about the kind of financial aid package the college can award you.

Title Insurance Companies Must Change Their Ways

In the last few years the real estate title industry has been in the news a lot more and usually it is not because of the good things they are doing. Most of the news has revolved around the illegal kickbacks and gifts they are giving to brokers in return for more business being sent their way. The latest story is from Washington and involves homeowners suing title agencies for providing illegal gifts to brokers and passing on extra charges to the customers, http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/289185_title19.html. These stories have become far too common and in the Internet age it is only a matter of time before anyone who is in need of title insurance will be able to find similar stories. Because of the increased knowledge title insurance providers should take heed and change their ways. There is no way to hide this information from consumers and those title companies who are engaging in these illegal practices will pay the price and rightly so.

Before I go any further I need to discuss exactly what Title Insurance is. Title Insurance is an insurance policy to guarantee your ownership against claims, liens or judgments that might arise after your purchase or loan has been completed. Title insurance providers research and certify ownership of real estate before it is bought, sold or refinanced. They search state and municipal public records for the property and persons in the transaction. The investigation is thorough and complete. The title company will notify you and your attorney or lender of any claims that may challenge your ownership or the new loan on the property. Title insurance is a requirement in almost every state in the US and it serves to protect lenders and homeowners against losing their loan or home due to title inaccuracies or deceit.

The problems arise when title companies attempt to buy their business from real estate brokers, attorneys, and/or mortgage brokers. The practice of giving gifts and kickbacks in return for additional business is illegal in every state but many title companies ignore this. This practice has been ingrained in the title industry and the fact that customers were unaware of it has made it highly profitable and difficult to discover. That is until recently. Customers are becoming better educated on the closing process and in turn what title insurance is and how much it should cost. One of the biggest reasons for this is because of the increased availability of information because of the internet. Consumers now have instant access to all the information they want with a couple of clicks of their mouse. Title companies can no longer hide what they are doing from their customers.

In the past most consumers were unaware that they could choose their own title insurance company and instead used the company that their broker or attorney recommended. The fact is that this is just a recommendation and customers have a right to choose who they want to use for their title services. Armed with this knowledge customer have the ability to shop around and find the best price for their title insurance. When looking for a title service customers need to ask for a detailed breakdown of all fees and charges from each company and determine the best price. If a company refuses to give this information or try to tell you it is an estimate and the price may change at closing they are obviously hiding something. These companies should be eliminated immediately. Once the information is obtained from a number of companies the customer should review everything and choose the company they feel most comfortable with. And remember some brokers and attorneys rely on gifts and kickbacks so they may try to convince customers that they cant choose their own title company or otherwise try to steer them away from the customers choice. If that happens they should look closer at the broker or attorney who they are working with because they are being less than honest about this. The customer can have all of the power if they properly educate themselves.

As more and more problems are being exposed in the title industry space is opening up for companies who are willing to change the way the title industry works. Companies like myClosingSPACE (http://www.myclosingspace.com) are trying to change the way consumers view title insurance and closing services by offering services directly to the consumer. They do not rely on leads from brokers or attorneys and as a result they do not need to rely on kickbacks to get increased business. Their goal is to educate the consumer and give them the lowest possible rates and they can do this because they are not adding junk fees to cover the cost of gifts and kickbacks that other title companies have. My Closing Space offers flat fee charges for title and settlement services and the quote that is received on the website is what the consumer pays at closing, there are no hidden charges that pop up during the closing process. What you see is what you get.

As the title industry gains more and more negative exposure title companies who are trying to change the way the business works will see more room for themselves in the market and this will greatly benefit consumers. When consumers are shopping for a home, mortgage, or even a refinance mortgage they do plenty of research to get exactly what they want and title insurance & closing services should be no different. It could mean the difference of thousands at closing. The internet helped consumers find new alternatives when it comes to mortgages and as they become more educated they will realize that they can save a significant amount of money by learning about title insurance and shopping around.

Mark Pilatowski is a title industry insider and has followed the litigation surrounding the title industry for the past few years. Because of the problems with other title companies he joined the team at http://www.myclosingspace.com. My Closing Space offers Title Insurance and closing services direct to the consumer without the junk fees and kickbacks that other title companies charge.Alten Blog33887

Barbecue Ribs - Competition Style in Your Backyard

Great barbeque recipes are hard to come by. Most recipes and books leave out important information like times and temperatures. In our book, Competition BBQ Secrets, we give you all the details on how to cook professional competition quality meats. And... guess what? You can do it to in your back yard. You dont need a fancy $2000 offset smoker. Just use your Weber kettle grill!...

Prepping your grill

Just about everybody has a Weber kettle charcoal grill in their back yard. You can smoke some pretty good ribs on these things. This is one of my favorite barbeque recipes because I can use mesquite wood and Lee will not allow me to put mesquite in his expensive Lang Smoker because of the residue it leaves on the inside surfaces. Anyway... heres how to set up your charcoal grill so that you are offset smoking and not grilling... I simply start it up by making two piles of charcoal briquettes on opposite sides of the grill (away from the center). Make sure your vents on the bottom of the grill are open and not clogged with ashes. I then squirt my lighter fluid on the briquettes and light them.

Start soaking your wood chips at least an hour before you will need them. I make sure the charcoal is white before I start smoking so that all the lighter fluid has burnt up and does not give your meat a lighter fluid taste. If you want to use a charcoal chimney to start your charcoal, thats OK too - some people hate using lighter fluid. Just dump your white charcoal from the chimney on opposite sides of the grill when they are ready. You can place a disposable aluminum pan between your charcoal piles and fill it with about an inch of warm water or beer if you want.

Prepping your ribs

You can either buy spareribs or what is called loin back ribs. If you buy the big spareribs, cut the brisket end off the ribs at the joint. Then trim the skirt meat off. Dont throw this away - you can cook it separately and eat it too. You also want to pull the membrane off the back side of the ribs. If you want, you can put your favorite dry rub on both sides of your ribs at this time. I prefer the more natural taste of the smoked meat with a little BBQ sauce, so I do not apply any rub or any other seasonings before smoking. Thats the great thing about barbecue recipes... you can change them up to suit your liking! Just dont change the technique too much.

Lets start smoking

When you are ready to start smoking, place your grate on the grill so that the holes near the handles are over your charcoal piles. This way, you can add charcoal as needed to maintain your heat. Some newer models have hinged grates for this purpose.

Now all you do is place your meat in the center of the grate - away from the charcoal piles. When I smoke ribs, I use a rib rack on top of the grate. Weber makes a good rib rack and you can get one at any good store that sells Weber grills. Place your trimmed pieces anywhere not directly over the coals. Throw some soaked mesquite chips directly on the charcoal and close the lid (dont overdo the mesquite chips - mesquite imparts a strong smoke taste so a little goes a long way). Feel free to used soaked hickory, pecan, oak, apple, or any other flavor of wood chips that suits your taste buds. This is another way to personalize your barbeque recipes... there are all different types of woods and wood combinations that you can use. There are even unique and exotic woods like grape vine. I personally like mesquite as I feel it is the only smoke flavor that will not get covered up by your sauce. If done right, its not overpowering, but you can still taste that delicious smoke flavor.

Open the vents on the lid all the way and insert a thermometer through one of the vent holes. This is important! I use one of those confection/deep fry style thermometers with the clip and long stem on it. Its important to measure the temperature as close to the meat as possible. Smoke your ribs at 230 - 240 deg F. If the temperature is too high (around 300 deg) for the first 30 minutes, dont worry about it too much. If it gets any hotter than 300 deg then crack the lid a little to let some heat escape. When the temperature gets too low, just open the lid and toss in a few new briquettes and/or soaked wood chips. Try to stay ahead of the game as far as heat is concerned because its easier to cool down a hot smoker than it is to get it back up to temperature if your fire goes out.

Cook the ribs for 3 hours. Dont open the lid unless absolutely necessary - remember, if youre looking, you aint cooking. While you are adding charcoal, you can also spray the ribs with apple juice to keep them moist. After 3 hours, take your ribs off and wrap tightly in foil and return to the grill for one more hour.

Ready for glazing

After one hour in the foil, take your ribs out of the foil and place back on the grill. Youll know your ribs are getting done when the meat is pulling away from the bone - this is a sure sign that your ribs are getting done. Maybe gently tug on one of the bones to see if it is loose. Also... if you pick up one end of a slab with a pair of tongs and your slab bends down 90, then that is another sign that your ribs are getting done. Barbeque recipes are not an exact science... you have to use some common sense. If its cold outside, or humid, or dry your times and temps may vary. Just keep an eye on things and increase or decrease times accordingly.

After removing from the foil, apply your favorite BBQ sauce and glaze the ribs for one more hour. You can cut your BBQ Sauce with honey to make a sweet glaze if that is what you like. Apply your glaze to both sides and flip after 15 minutes and reapply glaze after each 15 minutes. After one hour of glazing, let your ribs rest for at least 15 minutes and then slice between each bone. You are now ready to sink your teeth into some of the best ribs you have ever tasted! Mouth watering, tender, and falling off the bone good!

Automotive Batteries

Think of the battery as the heart of your car. You need a battery you can count on to get your motor running and keep it pumping all day long.

The car battery is an essential element of the intricate network that makes your car start and keeps the engine running. The battery powers most of the car's electrical components and accessory structures, such as the headlights, turn signals, fans, etc. While the alternator provides most of the electrical needs of the entire car system, the battery can keep them going in the event of an alternator malfunction.

There are many batteries available at automotive supply stores, and it's important to know exactly which model is the right choice for your car. The wrong battery won't work in your car, and it may even cause damage to the vehicle. Knowing which battery is right for your particular vehicle is extremely important, and it can also help to learn about the various battery manufacturers and automotive supply companies. You should only have to buy a battery every few years, so make sure you're buying the right one.

* Size Matters: Buying a battery for your car is like choosing a pair of shoes for you. One size does not fit all. The size of the battery itself is important, as it needs to fit snugly into the space allotted under the engine's hood. If the battery is too small there is the risk of it becoming dismantled and causing vibrations or damage. Further, the battery will either be a top post or side post model, which will determine how it fits and operates.

* Power Up: You need to know your car's specific power requirements before purchasing a car battery. Some cars need an 8-volt battery, while others require a 12-volt. There are a number of considerations to take into account, such as the size of the car and the number of accessories that must be powered. A huge sound system, for example, can easily suck the life out of an average car battery. A 12-volt battery should be able to maintain at least 7.2 volts when the vehicle is starting and while it is operational.

* Chill Out: If you live in a cold-climate area, it's important to check the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) before you buy. CCA is a measurement used to determine a battery's ability to start an engine at 0 Fahrenheit, within a 30 second period. A higher CCA rating means the battery will start your vehicle faster and more effectively in freezing weather.

* Get it in Writing: No matter how well known the manufacturer is, you need to get a written manufacturers warranty with your battery. Make sure that the battery is in original condition, and is not a recharged model. The quality and dependability of the battery you choose should be indicative of the warranty you're offered. Make sure that battery is guaranteed for the duration of the battery's life (ie: if you plan on using the battery for five years, look for a five-year warranty).

* Keep it Fresh: Whether you're buying bananas or batteries, you need to make sure they're fresh and damage-free. Just because it's a piece of car equipment, it's not OK for your battery to waste away on a stockroom shelf. Make sure that the battery you buy is produced by a known and respected manufacturer, and that it's fully charged and ready to start your car. If you're not careful, you can run the risk of purchasing a fake or recharged battery. Look on the side of a battery casing for a special label or decal. You'll find the month and year that the battery was shipped from the manufacturer's plant. The letters 'A' through 'M' represent months of the year. For example, 'A' is January and 'M' is December. The letter 'I' is not used. The numbers 1 through 9 denotes the year of manufacture. Therefore, if the sticker on your batter reads L4, you know that it was manufactured in November 2004.

A car battery provides starting power to your vehicle, so make sure it's dependable. Understand your car's requirements and know how to verify the quality of the battery before you make the final purchase.

The Right Question

Its the age old question asked by financial advisors, Can you really afford it? Unfortunately, most Americans, working as trained professionals in reputable industries, and filled with an innate sense of entitlement, will answer that question Yes. Of course I can afford it.

And why not? Certainly after a 40-50 hour exhausting work week you should be able to afford a decent wardrobe, your kids tuition for summer camp, and a nice family vacation. So why, when we work so much and so hard, are Americans in debt? Why do our salaries always fall short of what we need to survive?

The answer lies in the question. I dont mean to sound ambiguous. The fact is, if we base each purchase we make on the question Can I really afford this? we set ourselves up for budget-breakers. Fortunately, there is a better question we can ask ourselves that effectively cleans up our spending habits, and leave our dignity in tact.

In their 1992 National Bestseller, Your Money of Your Life, Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin lay out nine steps that will transform your relationship with money and achieve financial independence. In my experience, step two is enough to break most bad spending habits. This exercise changes our mind-set by asking a question we may not have thought before.

The exercise involves the concept of Life Energy. Life Energy is your time in hours traded for money. Some of us make an hourly wage. This is not quite the same as Life Energy, because it only includes the time you punch in to the time you punch out. It doesnt include the hidden hours we give to our employers: the time required for grooming ourselves, commuting, cooling down after a hard day, (not to mention the vacations and entertainment we must have to maintain our sense of balance.) Nor does our hourly wage reflect the money we must spend just to have the opportunity to work for our employer. Im talking about the expenses connected with costuming, transportation, meals, and other job-related costs. To know what your real hourly wage is, add all the extra job-related hours to your normal work week, and subtract the job-related expenses from your pay. Now you know how much you really make at work. A simple division problem shows you how much money you earn per hour. This is the amount of money you trade for your timeyour Life Energy. Keep this number in your head.

Whether or not you find this number satisfactory (that is considered in another step of the program) you are now equipped to ask the right question. The next time you are at the check out counter dont ask if you can afford that new gazingus pin. Instead, think of your new hourly wage and ask if this purchase is worth that amount of your Life Energy. For instance, lets say your adjusted hourly wage is $11 per hour. If your new gazingus pin is $67, thats equivalent to over six hours of your life! Is it worth it? This question can be very sobering for those used to saying Sure I can afford it! All of the sudden, the question becomes, Do I really want to sacrifice that much of my life for this?

Add to this question the subject of debt and buying on credit. If you are making your purchase on a credit card you are automatically paying a premium for time. And if you are struggling to pay off debts, you must realize that you wont even have the opportunity to work the six hours to pay for your gazingus pin for several days, weeks or even years. By then it may be up to ten, fifteen or even thirty hours of Life Energy. All for this gazingus pin. Is it worth it? Do you love this gazingus pin so much that five years from now, when youve paid your credit card down enough to reconcile this purchase, you wont mind throwing thirty hours in at work for it? Is your job so enjoyable?

Kind of puts paid employment into perspective, doesnt it? It also transforms our all-American sense of entitlement. If we look at time as money, maybe well be a little less cavalier and a little more cautious about where we throw it.

Is IT the New Utility ? You Better Believe It!

Walk into your office sometime and flip the light switch. If your lights do NOT come on, youll surely be unhappy, upset, frustrated and ready to chew your electric utilitys head off. Worst of all, you may be facing the loss of a serious amount of revenue. Your business can simply not carry on without electricity and lights.

Does your Information Technology (IT) share this exalted essential status? If not, youre risking serious business damage as IT has now joined electricity, heat, and air conditioning as utilities that we cannot afford to be without.

Just about everywhere, at the very least from an expectation standpoint, your network infrastructure must absolutely be up and running every minute of every day, keeping your Internet access open, your phone system reliable and clear, your fax machines ready to give and receive, and a host of other mission-critical applications functioning at peak efficiency. Should your IT systems break down, you, your company, your people and your customers cannot hope to continue functioning properly together.

CIO Magazine Editor Richard Pastore understands this new reality. He recently wrote a piece touting convergence as the new CIO buzzword, a term that replaces the previous buzz-mantra of alignment. Convergence, Pastore explains, now transcends alignment in that IT can no longer be considered a separate, side entity just trying to fit in, but instead has grown integral to every aspect, every department, and every strategic goal of your business. Networked technology is now tightly woven into the very fabric of every company.

What is the significance and breadth of this new utility mindset? For one thing, your professional workers must have high speed Internet in their homes and expect as well to seamlessly connect to the office at any time. This includes large corporations and mid- and small-size businesses alike. For another, it means your customers are never cut off from you, that technical difficulties never interrupt your services. Otherwise, calamities could be lurking, ready to strike.

Take the case of private training company whose sales depended 95% upon massive advertising campaigns conducted every weekend. Its CEO knew that his firms network of IP phones and Internet Servers had to be ready to go for the Monday morning loador else! Before he adopted the IT-as-utility model, he had to endure occasional Monday morning breakdowns, resulting in losses of $50K per HOUR!

When he finally got religion, and revamped his systems by replacing reactive procedures with pro-active monitoring, such beginning-of-the-week traumas came to an end. Now a team of experts closely monitored all his critical devices throughout each weekend so that come Sunday night he could be assured that they would be fully functioning the next morning when his customers, new and old, began calling or hitting the company website. Thats what is meant by utility service.

What does it take to make your network a continuously fully functional, expeditious, and a safe utility network? It first takes a solid commitment from the companys senior executive team. It means ending the mindset that IT is just a secondary function, that tech troubles will occur from time to time, that effective strategic management is directed toward non-technical matters (finance, product development, operations).

Second, it means investing in your firm with wisdom and confidence. Investing with wisdom means engaging a team of experts from your staff, or a consulting firm or outside vendor, to be sure that your business objectives are in line with current technologies. Someone has got to do some research in order to cut through marketing fluff and determine what is real and practical and what will drive your businesses today.

Investing with confidence means that once you have the roadmap drawn up, you have the right people designing the integration of that technology into your existing network. This design must take the utility approach in that the best products are chosen and configured for full redundancy and that every possible security risk is considered and mitigated.

Third, install a professional project manager to manage the implementation. True project management here coordinates all the necessary resources, assures timely product delivery, effectively plans and communicates necessary down time, and assures proper documentation. The project plan holds people accountable at every stage of the process to implement all necessary work for meeting the projects milestones and deadlines. It assures that they swiftly and effectively complete the implementation, then provide the necessary detailed documentation in order to facilitate both pro-active as well as reactive support.

Finally, the transition from implementation to ongoing support must be immediate and painless. Your project manager will clearly define all the necessary steps for making this transition as smooth as possible. In your firms pre-utility days, ongoing support would mean: You have a problem, go call IT. Obviously, a terribly reactive, and dismissive, frame of mind. Now, pro-active end-user training engages all users in the success of the transition.

To qualify as a utility, your IT systems must be viewed in an entirely new light.

For your network to truly become what it needs to be, traditional re-active, half-hearted support must become a thing of the past. Imagine your entire workforce, for example, waiting around to get your firms email system back up. Imagine this takes a few hours. Do a quick calculation in your head of the potential cost of all this waiting around. Without a utility frame of mind, that image of horror you come up with is a nightmare waiting to happen.

Happy Eid Day

To muslim people, Dr. Chef wish all of you a Happy Aid celebration, with advice... don't eat too much. Still feel good? Well, Ill make you healthy day today. What about your dishes today. Want to make house come different? Its all up to you as long as its a healthy dish. Today we will learn.

Modern cooking - Although classical cookery must constitute the basis of all innovations, the trend today is towards safe and efficient storage, simplification of food preparation methods and service, and improved nutrition. The classical art of cooking and modern cooking are dependent upon one another. Only those innovations and classical dishes which conform to basic nutritional principles in terms of ingredients, methods of preparation, and all other culinary rules can be considered modern.

The increasing interest in nutrition and in the nutritive value of foods has greatly influenced food choices. These choices are based on foods that are rich in nutrients, low in calories, and free of synthetic additives. In an effort to reduce fat consumption, whole milk and cream are being replaced by low-fat milk and yoghurt; herbs are replacing butter as seasoning for vegetables; more fish and fresh vegetables are being consumed; and fresh fruits are substituted for desserts that are high in calories. The use of basic methods of preparation, such as blanching, poaching, steaming, and grilling, that will conserve nutrients is equally as important as providing variety. Synthesizing classical cookery with these principal that lead to the health and well-being of the individual is basic to modern cooking.

Dietary Cooking - A specific diet is based on the modifications of the nutritional components of the normal diet. Included in these changes are modifications in the number of calories; modifications in one or more of the nutrients (proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals); and modifications in texture and seasoning (liquid, bland, or low residue). Although most of the normal foods are used, they must be tailored to meet the needs of the individual and be prepared so that none of the nutritional content is lost or damaged.

HOW TO GET RID BAD SMELL IN THE REFRIGERATOR

Sometimes there are too many things in your refrigerator, this will turn it smelly. ( curry, soups, sauces, pudding, etc..) Put about 300 gram of charcoal at one corner of your refrigerator (medium sized). The charcoal contains chemical substance that naturally will absorb the bad smell.. IF the smell still does not gone, take away all things in your refrigerator and wash the refrigerator.

Some Important Things To Remember When You Buy Used Cars

The first question you should ask if you're looking to buy a used car is How good your bargaining skills are ? If you've been out there checking out the lots of used car dealers, you should know those salesmen know how to do their job. So, what's the smart way of purchasing a used car without getting taken for a ride?

First of all, do never start off offering too little. That's one of the safest ways to get taken.

And never take the first offer the seller gives you either. You must always keep in mind your personal finances and budget.

You should also know what the car your looking at is worth, before you enter the used car dealer's store.

Ever heard of the Kelley Blue Book? This is a catalog that has all kinds of cars, listed by year, and their values. If you are thinking of buying a used car, it's a good idea to get a copy and compare prices. You can take advantage of knowing about the car when you are bargaining. If the seller doesn't like your offer, ask them for a counter offer. Look at the car carefully and try to find any faults that you can. For instance, a little damage here or there, any kinds of problems you can find, and use that as leverage when you are bargaining. If you can point those things out, it shows that you are shrewd and observant, and it will bring the price down. So, you can use the costs of fixing these various problems to lower your counteroffer. In the end, make sure there are no outstanding financial claims against the car, like an unpaid bank loan.

Check with the local Department of Motor Vehicles to find out what legal paperwork you will need. Different states have different regulations as far as smog control and things like that, and you will also need to title of the car and an official statement showing how many miles the vehicle has on it. The seller has to give you this, according to federal law. Most states require the seller to contact the DMV to tell them that the vehicle has changed ownership. Usually, you have to change the registration.

The best and safest way to pay for the vehicle is with a money order or a cashier's check. Ensure that the seller signs the title on the vehicle. This is the action that legally changes the ownership from the previous owner to you. Whenever possible, you should get a warranty from the seller. It's always safer to have a written warranty in case there are unforeseen problems.

You've Got E-mail!

At 7AM in the head office, Carly, the Vice President, walks into her office and immediately turns her laptop computer on. While sipping coffee, she goes through her e-mails and starts working on each of them. She surfs through the companys website to check for new announcements and her navigation leads her to a sales monitoring site where she quickly spots branches with significant change in daily sales. After sending an e-mail message requesting for a meeting with the branches, her screen pops up a reminder of another meeting an hour away.

At a later time, in one of the companys branches down south, Jerry, a customer service associate, opens the branch and starts the computer. He connects to the companys network and in a moment, he is pre-occupied reading e-mails for the branch. Seeing a company-wide memo to be kept on file for his co-employees to see, he downloads it. He fires up his internet browser and, in an instant; he begins to accept customers and encodes the data in the point-of-sale system. After a couple of hours, he consolidates his transactions and sends his data just in time for the branchs cut-off.

The two scenarios above depict a typical day for employees in the future. Carly and Jerry know the importance of accuracy in data. Jerry makes sure that his data get to the head office on time. He handles the data just like how he satisfactorily handles customers who flock to his branch. Carly is aware that without Jerrys data, she can never paint an accurate picture of the companys sales performance. Thus, she constantly visits the sales monitoring site to identify which branches need to be e-mailed for their data submission.

Three years ago, when the companys computerization program went full blast, nobody realized the sweeping value of electronic mail. Now that e-mail is ubiquitous in the company, there is an avenue where anyone can voice out and exchange concerns, reactions or ideas. As if it is not enough, everyone can take advantage of its natural benefits e-mail is cheaper and faster than letters (snail mails), less intrusive than phone calls and clearer than fax. Using e-mail, differences in location and time zone is a thing of the past.

Few people know that an electrical engineer turned programmer named Ray Tomlinson sent the first e-mail message; QWERTYUIOP. Tomlinson actually picked @ as the locator symbol in electronic addresses, which has been used ever since. Although at first his messaging system was not thought to have great significance, he never expected that he continues to affect peoples lives and businesses about thirty years later.

Just imagine the future without e-mail. Carly would use official memo (with a letterhead) to notify employees for a policy change in the company, phone call to set up a meeting with a co-employee in another team, make a mail-it to communicate with affiliate offices overseas, or set a face-to-face meeting to inform associates of a change in job responsibilities. It only takes a simple e-mail to actually do the job.

In hindsight, e-mail has become an important tool in peoples lives just like the lives of Carly and Jerry, or our lives in the future. So go ahead, log in and check if youve got e-mail!

Linspire Vs. Windows. Are you looking to get away from Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Products?

Are you looking to get away from Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Products? Than Linspire (a Linux based operating system) is one of the ways to go. In this article we will cover our experience with Linspire and trying to get out from underneath Microsofts thumb.

First we downloaded Linspire from their website paying a small fee of $19.95 with a coupon they offered through Google. The download is about 700 Megs. If you have a dial-up connection or high-speed light you may just want to buy the retail box version for around $59.95. When the download was finished we eagerly burnt it to CD and picked one computer for the install. Ah my laptop perfect specimen for this new operating system. We put the CD in and it booted from the laptop drive right into the install menu which also has the option to run from CD. Can this be true, we can just run the operating system from CD? We selected to run from the CD option, it took about 2-3 minutes and presto we were looking at a full working version of this new OS. It was amazing the menus, the Launch button all very similar to Windows, but it was not Windows. This is exactly what we wanted and more. So we decided to go ahead and do the hard drive install as the boot from CD option is more of a demo mode to try the software. We booted the laptop again into the Linspire install menu this time we selected install to hard drive. I stand up to walk away from my laptop which usually takes about 30-40 minutes to load windows completely. The Linspire install screen reads Your installation will complete in 13 minutes. What 13 Minutes? It must be calculating the time wrong, so I give it the benefit of doubt. Thirteen Minutes later I am cruising around in Linspire with all my drivers installed for my devices, it found every one. Now it is time to start installing the programs I work with on a daily basis, but wait Linspire has installed everything from DVD and CD burning software to an office suite that is compatible to Microsoft Office. To load this much into a windows box it would have taken me the better part of 2 hours. Linspire did it all off of one install in 13 minutes. I am sold, Goodbye Microsoft.

Over the next couple of days the family notices my Linspire computer and wants it put on their computers. No problem I will purchase this amazing operating system for the other computers. Then I start to read over my agreement for Linspire and it tells me that I may install it on all of the computers that my family owns. Wow, I picked myself up off the floor and waited a minute to clear my head. I am so used of Microsoft wanting me to buy more copies of something I already own, it never occurred to me that I could just install the software because I had bought it already. So I load up 2 other computers exactly the same install time as my laptop and I did not have to install one driver. We were all surfing the net and doing our basic daily routines for around twenty dollars.

Now it was time to add some new software to my system, games and other applications to make my life easier. Linspire comes with a program called CNR (Click-N-Run). When you create an account, CNR connects to their servers and will download and install software with one mouse click. This feature is an extra $19.95 a year for the regular service and has the same policy Linspire does as to which computers you can use it on. You get access to over 2,000 FREE applications everything from games to financial software. There are still a handful of applications and games you may want to buy and with a Gold membership you get a nice discount on those. As for anti-virus software you do not have to have it (Linux the operating system Linspire was developed from is not as prone to viruses) although it is recommended so you do not pass viruses through your Linspire computer to Windows computers which we all know get infected far to often.

A week later and our Linspire computers are running great no hick-ups everything is smooth and quick no waiting like in Windows. Than the bomb drops, we wanted to play Diablo 2 and Swat 4 on our Linspire computers. We start to look into how to load the games heres the part where Microsoft gets you. Most games require Microsoft DirectX to play and Linspire has no DirectX support. In short the only way to get the games running is to install a software package that will simulate a Windows environment in Linspire. The other down side is that in order to get the games working you will need to fine tune and tweak the software to get the games running properly. So unless you are a tech. or programmer you are not going to enjoy getting your games to work.

Another problem we noticed is that networking support between a Windows Computer and a Linspire computer is not at all that easy, and is very difficult if the Windows computer is loaded on a NTFS file system.

If you are looking for a nice cheap operating system for home use and do not have a network or play a lot of games, than Linspire is your alternative to Windows. Otherwise stay with your Windows computer for now.

Linspire offers a money back guarantee which we are not asking for, because we want to see this Operating System grow. So we all can get out from underneath Microsofts thumb should we so choose.

Alternatives To Liposuction

In todays society, everyone is struggling to be perfect. The perfect smile, the perfect skin, and the perfect body. Liposuction is a medical procedure that can sculpt the body into a more aesthetic shape. However, it is an extremely expensive procedure and can have a number of side effects.

There are alternatives to liposuction for those who cannot afford liposuction or are hesitant to go under anesthesia. One such alternative to liposuction that all doctors recommend is diet and exercise. Doctors stress the importance of diet and exercise as it gives the bodys metabolism a natural boost.

Another alternative to liposuction is called Mesotherapy. There is no surgery involved. The procedure includes injecting a series of medications including anti-inflammatory medication, hormones, nutrients and antibiotics into the fat layers. This type of treatment only works with the proper diet.

It is important to remember that there are no food supplements or drugs for Mesotherapy that are approved by the FDA. If you do not want to wait for the results of diet and exercise, then there are herbal remedies that are considered to be an alternative to liposuction. Seaweed wraps and other alternatives advertise that they are as effective as the surgery itself.

Having the liposuction surgery as many advantages. With liposuction alternatives, you cannot target just one area. With liposuction surgery you can target just one area to sculpt. There are some areas of the body that diet and exercise cannot reduce. With liposuction all areas of the body can be treated. Liposuction is considered an outpatient surgery with a very fast recovery rate. With liposuction surgery, there is almost no blood loss and the scars are virtually unseen.

As with any type of surgery, there will be some pain with liposuction. Although it will be minimal, there will also be bruising in the area that is treated. Swelling also occurs with liposuction. Doctors recommend that the affected area be wrapped tightly until the swelling dissipates. When you choose to use liposuction alternatives, there are usually none of these side effects because it is not an invasive surgery.

The costs of liposuction and its alternatives are usually not covered by insurance. The costs of both methods can be high and payment is due at the time the services are rendered. A standard liposuction treatment starts at around $3,500 dollars. Depending on how many areas you want the treated, it can cost up to $15,000 dollars. Many cosmetic surgeons take this into consideration and will set up payment plans as long as you pay half in advance. Everything that is required for the procedure is included in this amount, so there are no hidden costs. If a hospital stay is required, only those charges will be added.

Liposuction was developed in the 1970s and has evolved into a million-dollar industry. It was made popular in the late 1980s when many celebrities had the procedure done with good results. Doctors caution that liposuction and its alternatives should not be used as a weight loss tool. Although the fat that is removed cannot be reproduced, more fat can develop if a proper diet and exercise routine is not established.

Celia Namart has been meeting with eating disorder patients for a few years, she has given advice to many on the topics of weight loss and adopting workout routines, she is now writing tips and advice regarding liposuction and weight loss at http://liposuction.zupatips.com/Camacho Blog70395

Sikhism, A View of the Sikh Religion

At the northwestern tip of India is located The Golden Temple, or Harimandir Sahib, the most significant historical center on earth to the 20 million Sikhs worldwide. Here people from all walks of life are invited to join in listening to the hymns and teachings of the Guru Granth Sahib and to join in unity for a communal meal (Langar). This sacred gurdwara (temple) has entrances on all four sides, a symbol that this faith "is for people of all castes and all creeds from whichever direction they come and to whichever direction they bow." (Guru Arjun Dev)

Over five hundred years ago in Punjab, India, a son was born to a Hindi couple. The child, who was named Nanak, was expected to follow in his merchant father's footsteps. But this child was different in many ways. He was contemplative and thoughtful. He would frequently get lost in meditation. He seemed disinterested with the things of this world. He discussed religion with his Muslim and Hindi associates.

Finally, one morning he went to the river to bathe. According to legend, he entered the stream but did not surface. For three days and nights his friends searched for him, but he was not to be found. Then came the miraculous event-Nanak emerged from the river. During the time he'd been missing, Nanak had an incredible spiritual experience. He'd been in communion with God, and had been enlightened and given a calling to tell the world of his True Name. The first thing Nanak said upon his return was "There is no Hindu, no Muslim." Nanak's message was that only through true devotion to the one True Name could humans break the cycle of birth and deaths and merge with God. Nanak became the first Guru, and Sikhism came into being.

At that point, Guru Nanak left his home on the first of four major journeys to spread his message. Between the years 1499 and 1521 he traveled to such places as Sri Lanka, Tibet, Baghdad, Mecca, and Medina. Miraculous events accompanied him wherever he went, and he gained a large following. Finally at the close of his life he settled in Kartapur with his wife and two sons. His many disciples came here to listen to his teachings. Before he died, he appointed one to continue his work. Since Nanak, there have been nine other living gurus. The tenth, Guru Gobind Singh taught that there was no longer a need for a living guru. Instead, he found a spiritual successor in the Guru Granth Sahib (sacred texts), and a physical successor in the Khalsa.

Literally translated, khalsa means "the pure," and it is the goal of all Sikhs to become Khalsa. Officially, one becomes Khalsa when he or she has undergone Sikh baptism, and have agreed to follow the Sikh Code of Conduct and Conventions, along with wearing the prescribed physical articles of the faith. This ceremony takes place when a mature individual presents him or herself in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib and five other Khalsa Sikhs. The candidate is taught what will be expected of him or her, and then drinks Amrit (sugar water stirred with a dagger).

Khalsa members can easily be distinguished by certain articles of clothing which they wear as symbols of their faith. These are referred to as the Five K's.

* Kesh, or long, unshorn hair, is a symbol of spirituality. It reminds the individual to behave like gurus. (Male members wear a turban over the hair.)

* Kirpan, or the ceremonial sword, is a symbol of dignity. This is not regarded as a weapon, much as the cross is worn by Christians as a symbol of faith, and not an instrument of torture.

* Kangha, or comb, is a symbol of hygiene and discipline.

* Kara, or a steel bracelet, is a symbol of restraint in actions and a constant reminder of one's devotion to God.

* Kachha, or drawers, which symbolize self-control and chastity.

Sikhism is the fifth largest religion in the world. It began as a progressive religion which rejected all distinctions of caste, creed, race, or sex. It recognized the full equality of women at a time when women were regarded as property or entertainment of men, when female infanticide and widow burning was common and even encouraged. The legacy of Sikhism is its emphasis on one's devotion to God and truthful living.

Things To Consider In Choosing A Distance Education

In this day and age of multiple careers many people are considering furthering their education online. While this distance education alternative to the regular college campus offers the convenience of working with your current daily obligations this mode of education is not a good choice for all. If you are thinking about obtaining additional education and are looking at distance or online alternatives look over the following personal characteristics to help you decide if you would make a good distance student.

Are you self-motivated? This personality trait is perhaps the most important when it comes from separating successful distance education students from the rest. Unlike a traditional classroom you will not be meeting several times per week to keep you moving along towards progress. You will be assigned projects to complete, and have tests to take, and perhaps will view some teacher notes and then you will be left to your own devices. This means you have to make yourself study even the blandest of material. Your success or failure in learning the material and meeting deadlines will be solely on your shoulders.

Are you a procrastinator? While self motivation and procrastinating seem to go hand in hand, some people are motivated, but only at the last minute. If you wait until the last minute to study for tests or write assignments a distance education would not work well for you. Since you are on your own to prepare you will need to set aside time to prepare and study routinely in order to succeed.

Do you learn well by reading? If you went to a traditional college you would spend most of your class time in lectures, viewing videos, and participating in classroom discussions. If you learn well by reading and have better than average reading comprehension skills youll be more prepared to digest all of the reading material on your own. Unlike reading in a traditional environment, reading for a distance education may replace the majority of your lectures. If you cannot readily recall written material vs. learning by listening this could hurt your chances of doing well. There are some study tips that you could utilize to help you in this regard but you need to assess your learning style honestly.

Are you distracted easily? If you find yourself accidentally spending your study time watching the newest reality show, or on the phone, or surfing the internet, you will have to make sure you can discipline yourself come study time. Setting aside a quiet area to study will help. But ultimately, if you cannot resist temptation you wont be able to take in the material you are attempting to learn.

Lastly are you a social butterfly? For many considering a distance college education you may be past the traditional college years and not mind missing out on sorority parties, or keggers. However, college has other social opportunities including classroom debates, and just taking in the eclectic sort that hang out on college campuses. If you are craving the social interactions that can only be had on a college campus you may regret choosing a distance education.

So, if you are self motivated and have faith in yourself and do not need the assistance of lectures or others to learn you may do well choosing a distance education.

However, you should ensure that the iPod Shuffle you are buying has an AC/DV adaptor for quick battery charge. The current edition from Apple includes a 12-hour rechargeable battery.

Size:

iPods can be found in a wide-range of sizes. When it comes to the size of an iPod, more often than not, it depends on the features of a particular player. For instance, iPods featuring large screen, video capability, and hard drive facility can be big in size. As a result, they cost more. Be specific about your need; know what you want from an MP3 player, and then pick the one that suits you the best.

USB:

Universal Serial Bus or USB is a standard feature of all iPods. This helps you plug and connect the player to your PC enabling you to drag and drop music files from your PC into your iPod. The latest model of iPod supports USB 2.0 transfer.

Audio Format:

Make it a point to check whether the iPod you are buying supports some specific audio formats. Typically, all iPods, MP3 and MP4 players invariably support MP3 format. However, some players do not support all audio formats. For Instance, you may not be able to listen to a downloaded track just because your player does not support that particular music file which is in WMA format. Check the player`s specifications before buying it and make sure that your iPod supports most standard audio formats.

Additional Features:

Most MP3 players, MP4 players and iPod Shuffles are now available with a host of additional features like FM tuner and audio recording facility. Some players might cost you more just because they include these additional features. There is no point in paying more if these features are not of much interest to you. So, just look before you leap!!!

Braveheart (DVD) Review

Long before The Passion of the Christ, Mel Gibson directed another cinematic masterpiece, Braveheart. Filmed against the backdrop of majestic mountains and rolling meadows, it tells the historically-based (yet not entirely accurate) story of William Wallace, a common mans warrior who led the Scottish people in rebellion against King Edward I, also known as Longshanks. Written by Randall Wallace, an American tourist fascinated with a Scottish statue of his namesake, the script collected dust in Hollywood for over a decade before Gibson made the brilliant decision to put it on the big screen. Just like The Passion, its a decision he would not regret.

Set in the 11th Century, Braveheart catalogues the struggle of Scottish serfs who labor under the brutal oppression of English occupation forces. Amidst these terrible conditions, William Wallace (Mel Gibson) falls in love with Murron MacClannough (Catherine McCormack). Insistent on not sharing his wife (a proclamation by the king gives local rulers first-night rights to new brides) Wallace secretly marries Murron. Nevertheless, an English knight assaults her, sparking a fight with Wallace. Fleeing the village, Wallace believes Murron has escaped and will soon meet him at a secret rendezvous point. But Murron is captured and executed by the kings emissaries.

Angered by his wifes murder, Wallace instigates a local rebellion, slaughtering all the kings loyalists in his village. As his rebellion grows, a distraught Longshanks (Patrick McGoohan) dispatches his fabled Northern Army to destroy it. But the heroic Wallace delivers a stirring speech to rouse his men, while deploying an ingenious battlefield trick to defeat the kings cavalry.

With the power and legend of Wallace growing day by day, Longshanks relies on his daughter-in-law, Princess Isabelle (Sophie Marceau) to broker a truce. But Isabelles power is limited, and Wallace realizes his people can only win freedom if backed by the Scottish nobles. Their appointed leader is Robert the Bruce (Angus MacFadyen) who vacillates between his own idealistic views and his fathers pessimistic pragmatism. Will the nobles join with Wallace? Will the Scots win their freedom? Only history tells us the answer.

With elaborate costumes, vivid battle scenes, and a noble hero as its focal point, Braveheart is more than your typical run-of-the-mill action movie. Part history, part Hollywood heroism its timeless idealism strikes a cord with every viewer. In fact, the movie itself led to a revival in nationalistic pride that fueled the successful Scottish independence movement of the 1990s. Its a testament to the strength and character of the real life William Wallace. A thousand years later, his enduring legacy continues to transform the European landscape, and Mel Gibson captures the noble warriors passion with an awe-inspiring Academy Award-winning masterpiece.

How to Lose Your Home: The Cost of Poor Advice When Facing a Foreclosure

NJFRB Website: Free Foreclosure Help New Jersey

In February 2006, Jennifer and Roger Roberson found themselves unable to make their mortgage payments after Roger, a 37 year old father of two, lost his job as a technician for a major high-tech firm in New Jersey.

They received notice from their lender that the foreclosure process was being initiated on their home. Desperate for help, they conducted a brief internet search on how to stop foreclosure. After spotting an advertisement, they hired a foreclosure specialist to renegotiate a new payment plan with their lender. Assured that their case would be handled, they quickly handed over all the documents that were requested of them, and took a small sigh of relief.

He told me everything would be just fine, that I would have no problems getting a new payment plan, especially since we knew Roger was already hired for another position, said Jennifer.

A few months later, they received notice that their house had been sold at a sheriffs sale.

The Promise of Peace of Mind

Unfortunately these unsavory bottom feeding real estate operations can be quickly established, and just as quickly disappear. Many of these businesses will use tactics such as:

Promise no risk solutions more of a salesman than a specialist, these people will sell you more on stress relief than an actual solution. Real specialists will walk your through your situation step-by-step, and provide you with what options really do exist, including accepting foreclosure.

Bait and switch they will advertise a low-cost fee then inflate the fees, or they may charge a flat-fee, only to proceed with foreclosure with or without the customers knowledge.

Charge you to buy your home a foreclosure specialist in Virginia charged a homeowner $3,500 to purchase their house and rent it back to them.

Flip your home a Colorado attorney was recently cited for reselling his clients foreclosed properties, making as much as $50,000 a transaction.

Its really a shame, says J.M., a foreclosure attorney in New Jersey (who wished to remain anonymous). These people are facing the worst of times, and these predators are sharks looking for nothing more than a quick buck at the expense of their fellow man.

The Do it Yourself Solution

Yes, you can speak to your lender directly to renegotiate a plan. In fact, its advised that you keep an open line of communication with them if you do receive a notice of foreclosure. Compiling your personal finances, providing proof of hardship, and stating your intentions on how you will get your finances in order are all important steps.

But the problem isnt you, says J.M., the problem is who you get on the other end of the phone. Most people who are picking up at the lending company arent trained or given the incentive to take you by the hand.

Finding the person who can say yes to you can be extremely difficult. This is where hiring a specialist makes sense.

How to Find a Real Specialist

The answer is not so simple. But like anything else, if its too good to be true, chances are it probably is. Things to look for in a specialist are:

References ask them how many foreclosures they have negotiated, and if they have any references to validate this.

Trade associations there are legal and lending organizations that provide approved foreclosure specialists

Word of mouth ask around, nothing beats a trusted reference from a close friend or family.

Take Action & Be Aware

The most important thing for you to do is be aware of your options, and know what to expect from a foreclosure specialist. Grand promises, abnormally low prices, and lack of references are all red flags when searching for an advisor.

7 Golden Rules of Online Customer Service

How do you treat the people with whom you do business? Many times what we forget in this online world where so much of our customer service is automated is that, in the end, we're still doing business with other people. Do your customer service procedures create raving fans or send people away into the Internet black hole, never to be heard from again, except when you're bashed on some blog or disparaged in a discussion forum post?

What's the real price you pay as an online business owner for your customer service? Usually, the "real price" boils down to one thing -- word-of-mouth-marketing. If your customer likes the way you handle a situation, he will probably tell tell 3-5 others. However, if he feels he was treated poorly or unfairly, he'll tell 50 of his closest friends about the bad experience. Sad to say, we human beings love to complain much more than to praise. Why burn bridges with your customer when you don't have to?

Online business owners often create customer service rules that are based on fear -- fear of being taken advantage of, fear of someone getting the best of you, fear of someone not paying you for your time What happens if the entire basis of your customer service standards is fear? Well, then fear-based outcomes is what you'll get, because you tend to get what you choose to focus on. So, if you perceive that everyone in the world is out to get you and take advantage of you, then you're right.

Is there a good middle ground to choose that protects both your interests and gives your customer a great experience? There is, and you'll find it in my simple, 10-second philosophy of customer service. Ready? Here it goes.....treat your customer how you want to be treated. That's it -- nothing high tech here.

To help you evaluate your online customer service for my Golden Rule philosophy, here are 7 standards you should consider:

1. Don't hide behind the legalese. Don't expect your customer to page through a multi-page, small print document and read and understand all of your stipulations, especially if they're written in legalese rather than simpler English. If you put unfavorable or difficult terms in your Terms of Service agreement and your customer signs it, sure, you have legal protection to back up whatever terms they stipulated to with their signature. But, will the wrangling over those terms be worth it in the end? If you have terms that your customer might not find favorable at a later date, be sure and point those out to him in the beginning. Don't expect him to figure it out on his own, and don't hide behind the cowardly excuse, "Well, you should have read the Terms of Service thoroughly There's nothing I can do."

2. Walk a mile in your customer's shoes. Would you want to be treated the way you're treating them? If what you're doing to your customers makes you queasy and uneasy, that's your instinct telling you that what you're doing isn't just and proper. Moreover, how would you feel if you were treated in this fashion?

3. Make it simple to do business with you. Don't make your customer have to hire an attorney to understand your contract or to do business with you. I'm not advocating that you completely ignore legal help and advice. However, an attorney's job is to protect you from ALL liability, even those things that have a very small likelihood of actually occurring. Consequently, this usually translates into a very long document that's very difficult to read and comprehend. Work with your attorney to transform any contracts or Terms of Service agreements that you have into ones that are easily read and understood by the average person.

4. Don't do customer support via email. When you're first starting out, using email to answer service problems is ok, but as it becomes more and more difficult to send and receive legitimate business email, you'll find that you start to lose inquiries as your business grows larger and as your number of inquiries increase. At that point, think about installing a virtual support desk. This is a website that contains common FAQs and answers, as well as offers your customers the ability to open a ticket to report a problem. All correspondence occurs within the site, so you lessen the possibility of lost email. One of the more popular programs is Kayako, www.kayako.com.

5. Make it easy to contact you. Nothing is more irritating than wanting to speak to a real, live person for help and all you find is a contact form or an email address. Don't leave your customers out in the cold. Offer several options for contacting you, whether that's by email, phone, instant messaging system, live chat on your website, or a help desk/trouble ticket system.

6. Make it easy to stop doing business with you. I learned a valuable lesson from the Director of Admissions when I worked as a student affairs administrator at a small college and was trying to change a student's mind about dropping out of school. He told me, "Once they're already decided to leave, their minds are made up and there's no turning back. Just let them go." This applies to your customers as well. There may be a small percentage that you can salvage as a customer in this process, but the overwhelming majority have already made their final decision. Don't make them jump through hoops to cancel their business with you -- make it as easy and painless as possible. However, do follow up with a phone call or email or survey to determine the reason for their departure, but don't force them to go through this process to exit. Remember the AOL service cancellation call that was recorded and posted online that became a huge embarrassment for AOL? Don't let your canc!
ellation policy become the next big Internet joke.

7. If in doubt, ask your customer what to do. If you and your customer can't come to a resolution that feels equitable to both parties, ask your customer what he believes is the fair thing to do. I believe that generally people are good and fair and that most will treat you humanely if they've been humanely treated by you. The final decision may not be everything that you want, but it's probably not everything that your customer wants, either. You can use this strategy to end on a positive note, and while the customer may not return to you, he probably also won't tell everyone he meets that you're an ogre, either.

Figure out how you can implement this Golden Rule philosophy in your online business. You'll find it to be a business asset that's priceless.

Easy Heart-Rate Trick Gets You Fit - and Skinny Too!

Every evening in the gym, the ladies (and a few guys) can be found working purposefully on bikes, treadmills and elliptical trainers. The whir of machinery fills the air and determination is fired by visions of losing weight and getting in really good shape.

Some casually browse the pages of old magazines, read the latest thriller or chat with friends as they dutifully put in their "forty five minutes" of "slow and steady". They are well-intentioned but clueless. I question the results of their efforts but decide it is unwise to offer unsolicited advice.

One lady, however, is focused and pays attention to what she is doing. She periodically refers to the treadmill's glowing red display and adjusts her pace accordingly. Good for her! She is monitoring her heart rate.

What she knows, that the others don't know, is that your Heart Rate is a dead accurate indicator of just how hard your body is working. This is the best way to make sure that you are exercising vigorously enough to improve your fitness level but not so hard as to overexert yourself.

This is also a great way to lose weight and get really fit in the shortest amount of time. What you have to do is exercise at the correct intensity within an optimal range. This is your Target Heart Rate (THR) which is expressed as a percentage of your Maximum Heart Rate (MHR).

You can calculate your personal Target Heart Rate, but this gets a bit tricky. You have to know your Resting Heart Rate (RHR) and plug it into a couple of formulas: (MHR RHR X (50% - 80%) + RHR = THR) where (Age 220 = MHR).

You also have to know how long to exercise, at which point in the optimal range (50% to 80%) and you have to monitor your heart rate while you are working out. There are charts that estimate your THR for you but their accuracy can vary, up or down, by as much as ten percent.

Confused? Don't be. Dump the math and take a low-tech approach. You already have a simple, built-in heart rate monitor that is perfectly calibrated to your body.

And, you already know how to use it because it's as simple as watching your breathing. Your respiration rate is how you monitor the intensity level of your exercise and it relates very closely to your actual Heart Rate. You can use this method with any piece of gym equipment and while walking or jogging outdoors.

WHAT YOU NEED TO REMEMBER is that, as your workout progresses, you may exercise at any one of three levels or zones. I will describe each zone and relate Heart Rate to how hard you will be breathing.

ZONE 1. (50% - 65% OF MHR) Breathing is normal at this level and you can easily carry on a conversation with a workout partner. This is your warm-up and cool-down zone which will do little to get you fit unless you are very overweight, very out of shape or have been ill.

ZONE 2. (65% 80% OF MHR) Your breathing becomes somewhat to very noticeable. This is your training zone where you will do most of your work, develop cardiovascular fitness and burn calories. At the lower end of the range (65%), you will be able to speak to a partner easily but your speech is somewhat broken as you deliver phrases between breaths. At the top end (80%) you will be breathing very hard. Though conversation is possible, breathing may be your priority.

ZONE 3. (ABOVE 80% OF MHR) Entering zone three, you begin panting and gasping for breath. This level can be hazardous for many of us and is best reserved for competitive athletes.

TO GET FIT IN THE SHORTEST AMOUNT OF TIME, DO THIS:

1. Tell your doctor that you are going to begin exercising at a level where you will be breathing vigorously. Ask if, based on your physical condition, you should limit your effort and if so, to what level.

2. Warm up at a conversational pace and then increase your speed or intensity level to 70% - 75% of MHR (breathing strongly) so that after about five minutes you feel fatigue setting in. Back off and catch your breath at 65% of MHR or below.

3. Now really pick up the pace (fit walkers find a hill) and push to 75% to 80% of MHR (breathing vigorously). Hold it there, from one to three minutes, until your body is asking for a break and then slow down to 60% of MHR, or below, until you recover.

Repeat, gradually increasing the number, duration and intensity of intervals as you are able. If you challenge yourself to work hard your workout should, at most, take no longer than thirty minutes.

Cool down and have a refreshing drink of water. These interval workouts, using your breath to gauge intensity will work very effectively to burn calories and get you in shape.

And always remember "Be Strong. Be Lean"

Seven Tips for Fire Safety

Its easy to think a house fire wont happen to you. But dont be fooledhouse fires are more common than youd think. All it takes is a spark, a flammable substance, and some oxygen to cause a tragedy. Dont let yourself be caught unpreparedfollow these safety tips to prevent fires in your home, and get out safely if one occurs.

Keep your fire alarms in working order. Make sure you have working fire alarms on every floor of the houseespecially the kitchen and near your bedroom. You should change the batteries twice a year. Dont ever turn off or remove your fire alarms for any reason. People most often do this when theyre cooking and creating a lot of smokethat fire alarm can get annoying when it keeps going off while youre trying to cook. Dont smash the alarm with a broom handle, tempting as it isdont even turn it off. Its easy to forget to turn it back on. Instead, open the windows and turn on the kitchen fan before you start cooking. Its also best not to trust that your fire alarms work, even if they have fresh batteriestest them by lighting a match underneath.

Have a just-in-case plan. Make sure your kids know what to do if the fire alarm goes off. They should hold hands and stay together, and one parent should be in charge of leading them out to a safe place. They should know how to get in formation and follow orders, even when half asleep. They should understand that they cannot be allowed to stop to find their favorite toy or pet. Pick a prominent place safely away from the houseunder a certain tree, by the swing-set, or at the end of the driveway, for examplewhere the family will meet in case of a fire alarm. You should keep a strong flashlight by your bed in case your power fails, as it often will during a fire. Rehearse your escape plan several times a year.

Know how to get out. If youre upstairs and the fire gets to your stairway before you do, you could be in serious troubleif you dont have an escape plan. Be sure all your windows open easily, and keep some escape ladders in your upper floors. Make sure both spouses and older children know how to unfold, safely attach, and use the ladders. Practice escaping from any upper floors of the house a few times a year.

Keep fire extinguishers in the house. Most guides will suggest that you have one on each floor in your house, especially in the kitchen and in the basement near the furnace and water heater. Be sure that all your fire extinguishers will work for wood, chemical, and electrical firesnot all brands do. Make sure both spouses and all older children know how to use the fire extinguishers.

Remove obvious fuels. Keep dry leaves and other detritus at least thirty feet away from your homethey are very flammable. If you have a fireplace or wood stove, store the wood in a wood shed at least thirty feet from your house. If you have a wood shop, make sure sawdust is not allowed to build upits extremely flammable and can ignite with enough force to blow a hole through a wall!

Get a fireproof safe. Its extremely important never to run back into a burning building, for any reasonit could be a death sentence. If theres something you really dont want to losevaluable documents or jewelry, for examplebuy a fireproof safe or cabinet to keep it in. That way, you wont worry about leaving something important inside the house, and you wont be tempted to run back inespecially if the fire doesnt look that bad yet. Even if it doesnt look that bad, it can still kill you. Keeping your most important belongings in a fireproof safe or cabinet could save your life.

Do a routine fire safety check. There are a lot of little things you can do to lessen your risk of a fire. Never leave a candle burning when you leave a room. Check your electrical wires and extension cords for signs of wearand never let them lie under rugs or furniture. Never leave anything that could catch fire near a heat source, like an oven, a radiator, or a portable heater. Regularly clean the lint from your dryers lint trap and tubing. Empty ashes from fireplaces, wood stoves, and ashtrays into a metal container, not a plastic garbage bin. Never smoke in bed.

You can protect yourself from fires just by making a few safety checks part of your routine, and being aware of fire safety in the home. Dont be caught unawarescheck in with your local fire station for their advice on how to fireproof your home, and follow these simple tips to make sure a fire never happens to you.
